A Saint Jude Photo
Name, where are you from?
I'm Jude Woodhead, from Forest Hill in South East London
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I haven't been to a proper gig in ages because of tinnitus, but I saw Steve Reich's Different Trains last year and that was one of the most captivating performances I've ever seen.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
It would be sick to see a live duet of Arthur Russell and Colin Stetson! They've both really pushed the limits of what you can do with their instruments, and it would be sick to see them interact.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I think, like most people from London, grime/garage culture was really important, but to be honest, I've never really been part of a subculture. I think movements like that have kind of changed, because of stuff like Instagram there can't really be a counter-culture because counter-culture is the culture if that makes sense? As soon as something rebellious occurs, it's instantly absorbed into the mainstream.
I've also recently been reading about Situationist International, who were a group of artists and thinkers in the mid-20th century. Doesn't really count as a subculture but definitely a movement who's thinking is especially relevant today.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
That's a hard one, maybe Kanye West in 2010-13, because at that point he was probably the best musician alive, and also the one most relevant to our current times. I'm kinda fascinated by him because he's such a contradiction.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
Either The Royal Albert Hall, or my local woods on Halloween, because they were really surreal as places to witness live music in their own way.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Lizzy Mercier Decloux. She's not completely unsung, but she should have been one of the big artists in the New Wave movement, and never received the ratings she deserved. Special mention as well to DJ Screw, who's one of the most influential DJs of all time but isn't that recognised in the mainstream.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Kids With Guns' by Gorillaz. I think my brother got this album and I used to listen to the whole thing on repeat. I think it's an album that's definitely had a big effect on me, but you can also hear its influence on a lot of people my age doing music as well.
A song that defines the teenage you?
The whole of Original Pirate Material but in particular 'Has it Come to This?'.
One record you would keep forever?
'22 A Million' by Bon Iver.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Old stars
Filling up my throat,
You gave them to me when I was born
Now they're coming out"
From 'Masterpiece' by Big Thief. I could have picked a lot of Big Thief's tunes, Adrianne Lenker's songwriting is so strong but also so sensitive at the same time. She writes about trauma in a way that I don't think anyone else in the world can. It's really inspiring to hear someone so emotionally lucid tackle these really difficult subjects head-on in a way that's really genuine.
A song you wished you had written/made?
Massive Attack - 'Paradise Circus'. This tune sums up so many of the things that I want to achieve with my music. I know it's a bait one but it's pretty close to perfection in my opinion.
Best song to turn up loud?
22Gz - 'Sniper Gang Freestyle'.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'93 Bang Bang' by Von Bikrav.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
Alicia Keys - 'Unthinkable', or 'Leaving' by Andy Stott.
Any new artists/bands you are into at the moment?
M1llionz - 'North West'. New artist from Brum doing the drill thing in a new way - almost Mike Skinner levels of conversational.
Sam Akpro - 'Blame'. Me and Sam got a tune hopefully coming out later this year hold tight for that!
Akai Solo 'GalaxyEyes'. Sick new rapper and producer coming through doing the Earl/MIKE/Medhane style lo-fi rap thing his own way.
Special shouts to Glows and Drug Store Romeos as well: Glows - 'Afterthought' and Drug Store Romeos - 'Now You're Moving'.
