Musician — Hyogo
A Swe Photo
Name
SWE (DOBERMAN)
What do you do?
Musician / Director of odd numbers.
Where are you from?
Hyogo, Japan.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
The Specials. I was following them on their tour about 15 years ago. I remember that the show at CLUB CITTA in Kawasaki was pretty good.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Maybe ‘60s Mods, SKA, Skins.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Café en Tóquio or Leon Caballo in Basque, Spain. There was a mixture of cultures which was so cool and it inspires me even now.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Elvis Costello when he had a ducktail hairstyle. I want him to perform with DOBERMAN as a vocalist.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Jerry Dammers from The Specials. It looks like he doesn’t care about the past and always focuses on what he wants to do now. So I want to ask him about those things.
Your greatest unsung hero (or heroine) in music?
Declan McKenna. Actually, he came to Japan a few months ago. I often listen to his songs, like “Brazil”.
How did you select the tracks for this playlist?
I chose songs that might be known to the experts of UK culture regardless of nationality. I started this playlist with 'Disco Devil' from Lee Perry which is what I do when I DJ too.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Mirror In The Bathroom' by The Beat. It is the first song that I played on repeat even though I knew The Specials earlier.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'My Generation' by The Who.
One record you would keep forever?
'Lioness: Hidden Treasures' by Amy Winehouse. I can listen to it any time.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Let's Dance' by David Bowie.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Clint Eastwood' by Gorillaz. I added this to the playlist too.
Any new bands you are listening to now?
Gateballers. This is a band based in Tokyo. Even though I haven’t been to their gigs I actually added their songs to the playlist and I want to perform together with them.
