A Jet Black Tulips Photo
Name, where are you from?
Jet Black Tulips, from Belfast, Northern Ireland.
What do you do?
School/College and making music.
Describe your style in three words?
Retro, modern, cool.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Liam Gallagher at Belfast SSE, coz we are all so young, this was our first, and also our best gig yet. Full-on rock n roll and 10,000 people singing every word, it doesn't get much better than that!.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
The Who - to witness their stage presence up close and to witness Keith Moon play would be immense. Plus early Who crowds were a cool looking bunch! The Verve - we would love to hear them play tracks from 'A Storm In Heaven' and 'A Northern Soul' on their set and to hear Nick McCabe's wall of sound on that Les Paul.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Without a doubt Britpop has influenced us, and many others that came along after the '90s. That explosion of guitar bands topping the charts and touring the world is something we would love to see come around again. We love Mod subculture for its clothes and attitude to life, proper cool suits and hair cuts!
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
This was a tough one but it has to be Amy Whinehouse and we would nominate 'Me & Mr Jones' as it has a retro, old school RnB/jazz sound we love. From her interviews, she looks like she was great craic and was always well dressed.
Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
With the Jet Black Tulips only forming slap bang in the middle of a global pandemic, any gigs we have had have been pushed back to at least April of 2022, so unfortunately we have not yet been able to grace the stage. However, We are due to play Voodoo - Belfast, which has seen the likes of Inhaler, The Lathums” and The Snuts to name a few gig there, it holds a great atmosphere and has been brilliant for local bands. We can’t wait to hit that stage.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Gem Archer, might be debatable if he is an unsung hero, but his writing in Heavy Stereo along with his guitar playing and vocals, really does not get the recognition it deserves. He is, without a doubt, one of the coolest musicians of the last thirty years!
The first track you played on repeat?
'Holy Mountain' by Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Going Up The Country' by Canned Heat. Proper feel-good tune.
One record you would keep forever?
'Hats Off To The Buskers' by The View.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Think of me what you will, I’ve got a little space to fill"
From 'You Don’t Know How It Feels' by Tom Petty.
A song you wished you had written?
'Bat Out Of Hell' by Meatloaf.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Disco' by The Music.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'I Gotta Get Drunk' by Willie Nelson.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Elephant Stone' by Stone Roses.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Hard To Explain by The Strokes.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
We have been huge fans of bands that are not necessarily new but just haven't broken onto the scene, like the DDE’S and Pretty Cartel. For new bands that are really making a bit of noise, Pastel and Afflecks Palace seem to be where it's at!
