03Interview

Name, where are you from?
I’m Scarlett from Canterbury, Kent.

What do you do?
I am a post lady.

Describe your style in three words?
Original, striking and timeless.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
The Stone Roses at the Etihad Stadium in 2016.

If you could put any three bands in history on a lineup?
The Small Faces. The Kinks. The Clash.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Definitely, I’m all about the 1960s and 1950s, timeless decades.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Princess Margaret.

Where is your favourite independent venue?
Rivoli Ballroom - it’s a stunning 1950s decorated ballroom, one of the last surviving in London, it’s so unique and beautifully designed! The details are incredible!

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Blind Willie Johnson was an American gospel blues singer in the 1930s. He produced many songs that became popular in the late '20s until the Great Depression wiped out most of his audience and never recorded again after 1932. He died in the burnt ruins of his house in 1945 after contracting malaria which no hospital would treat him for due to being blind.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Sweet Soul Music' by Arthur Conley. The first single I played on my first record player.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'I’m only Dreaming' by The Small Faces.

One record you would keep forever?
'I’d Rather Go Blind' by Etta James -

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“You could miss out school, why go to learn the words of fools”

From 'Itchycoo Park' by The Small Faces.

A song you wished you had written?
'Ooh La la' by The Faces.

Best song to turn up loud?
'All Day And All Of The Night' by The Kinks.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'How You Remind Me' by Nickelback.

A song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Eenie Meenie Minie Moe' by Little Luther.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Enjoy Yourself' by The Specials.

Any new bands you’re into at the moment?
Because I’m into artists and bands from the 1950s and 1960s, it’s more of a feeling of discovering existing music that is new to me rather than new and modern from this decade. A couple of songs I’ve been listening to lately that I’ve discovered include 'Seven Nights To Rock' by Moon Mullican, Boyd Bennett and His Rockets and 'Let No Man Steal Your Thyme' by Pentangle.
