What do you do?

Artist

Where are you from?

Okinawa

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?

I think my best gig is yet to happen. I’m looking forward to it!

Which subcultures have influenced you?

If we are talking about UK influences, I'll say the energy of punk. I think it's influenced me in a way that's not clearly visible but I'm confident that my spirit of rebellion will always live on.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?

ROSE ROOM. It’s like an old school jazz record cafe tucked away in a shopping centre in downtown Naha, the largest city on mainland Okinawa. They have a mind-blowing number of CDs. I was going to a prep school to get into art college. I would have been around 18 and that’s when I first heard about this place. I dropped by one day and plonked myself down on the sofa. There was a salaryman type guy in there, drinking beer by himself on a weekday. It was such a comfortable environment and left a lasting impression on me.

If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?

I’ll go for the Sex Pistols. I want to know just how much of a hooligan Sid Vicious was.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?

If it’s a UK musician, then I’ll say Richard D. James, AKA Aphex Twin. I’d like to do some magic mushrooms with him. He said in an interview that he had spoken with the wind. I want to know what that’s like.

Your greatest unsung hero (or heroine) in music?

I’ll say Denzel Himself, a UK artist that I used to listen to a lot. I got to know him after listening to a song he collaborated on with A.G Cook.

04Playlist Notes

What is the concept of the playlist?

I haven’t listened to a massive amount of UK music, even stuff from my generation, so the playlist is basically my take on UK taste and groove. It’s kind of like my own UK or the UK that surrounds me personally.

A song that defines the teenage you?

That’s really recent for me and I think my stronger feeling of that time is kind of acting suspiciously, so I’ll say the Aphex Twin track, ‘T69 Collapse’.

Best song to turn up loud?

I’ll say Slowthai and the track ‘Mazza’ he did with A$AP Rocky.

A new band you are listening to right now?

H2H.
