Climb that tree. For our October playlist, we honour the 100 Club x The Cave Club. A Hallowe’en inspired forage into the darker realms of British Psychedelia compiled by The Horrors’ bassist Rhys Webb.

The Cave Club is a monthly freak-out for fans of psychedelic pop and tripped-out rock 'n' roll, which is hosted by Rhys Webb of The Horrors and friends, and enjoyed a brief stint at the 100 Club. Follow us on Spotify to enjoy the tracks, which have all been selected by Rhys from his personal collection. Read on for his notes on a few favourite tricks and treats from the mix.

The Attack - Strange House

Strange House inspired the name of The Horrors debut LP released in 2007. Rhys recounts those early days:

“Searching for ideas in an East London pub, ‘The Attack’ was suggested ... Tom Furse (then bass player) excitedly interjected, ‘Strange House!’ We all instantly agreed, that was the one. The photograph for the album cover was already in place and seemed to fit perfectly. The track itself is taken from an unreleased collection of material recorded in 1967/1968.”

The Attack morphed into the hard rock group Andromeda who feature here with their 1969 single ‘Go Your Way’.

Fleur De Lys - Gong With The Luminous Nose

Shyster - Tick Tock

Sharon Tandy - Daughter Of The Sun

“Frank Fenter, Managing Director of newly launched Atlantic Records Europe had a thing for Hallowe’en. Shyster’s ‘Tick Tock’ was released to celebrate the spooky season in 1967. Daughter of the Sun, B-side of the equally fantastic ‘Hold On’ was released around the same time the following year.

A further connection here is the involvement of overlooked Freakbeat rockers, Fleur De Lys who are the recording group behind both discs. Fleur De Lys also give us our Lewis Caroll inspired track two for this playlist, ‘Gong With The Luminous Nose’.”

Screaming Lord Sutch - The Cheat

“Screaming Lord Sutch famously spooked audiences with his version of ‘Jack The Ripper’ recorded by the legendary Joe Meek at his Holloway Road flat-come-studio in 1963. ‘The Cheat’ was his first recording following the death of his former producer and captures a foray into the experimental new world of post ‘Beatles-go-psychedelic’ production.

‘Smoke and Fire’, also featured on this playlist is a favourite of mine taken from his 1970 ‘Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends’ LP featuring Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, John Bonham and Nicky Hopkins. Check it out!”
