03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

Punk. Casual. Black.

The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?

Eminem - My Name Is

A fan of music from very young, I can vividly remember singing along to various early '90s classics in the back of my Mum’s car. The first album I ever bought with my own money was The Slim Shady LP and I near wore it out on the Walkman whilst trying to hide it from my Dad.

A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?

Nirvana - Breed

You didn't grow up as an Alternative music fan in the late '90s/early '00s and not own this album. Nirvana are rightly legendary and although my maturing sensibilities would grow to prefer their earlier albums, 'Nevermind' has to be held up as the band's crowning achievement.

A song from your most memorable gig?

Sepultura - Roots Bloody Roots

I attended a show in Brighton the night after the murder of Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell. Although not a Pantera song, we were treated to a live rendition of this song by Hardcore punk band Throwdown in his honour. I was massive fan of both bands so this was huge.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

The Isley Brothers - This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)

Having been afflicted at birth by the family trait of having two left feet I am by no means the biggest fan of dancing. However, if you ever mix this or any other Soul/Motown classic with an equal measure of the dizzy juice then you may catch me strutting my very limited stuff.

A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?

The Chats - Drunk n Disorderly

These guys are just too much fun. A loud, mullet-sporting lo-fi garage punk band singing songs about good and often illicit times with friends on a shoestring budget. This is a bit more polished than their previous release but still a fantastic listen.

Best song to turn up loud? And why?

Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device

Stiff Little Fingers for me are the prototype of what any good punk bad should be; loud, angry with a firm disrespect for authority. Growing up in Belfast during The Troubles, the band channelled this tumult in to the epitome of late '70s British teenage rebellion.

A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?

Depeche Mode - Blasphemous Rumours

I will hold my hands up here: I tried very hard during my formative years to cultivate a brooding Goth persona and whilst I look back with a heavy dose of cringing it did introduce me to a varied palette of music, especially the gloomy and quirky lyrics of Martin Gore.

An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?

IDLES - Samaritans

IDLES are my favourite band right now so it would've been a massive disservice to them if they didn't appear. Their most important song to date; a fiery critique of toxic masculinity. Joe Talbot delivers a vital message of empathy and love winning out in an often unkind society.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way - 2004 Remaster

This is a tried-and-tested classic. Nothing quite brings people together on the dance floor as the lights come up like Fleetwood Mac. You could throw a dart at their entire discography and come out with the perfect crowd-pleaser but this for me sticks out as the prime example.
