03Interview

Name, what do you do?
My name is Wizzy. I'm a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born and raised in Surabaya. I am always curious about trying new stuff because I love to explore, especially in my musical journey.

Describe your style in three words?
Simple, casual, and chic.

What does the Fred Perry Shirt mean to you?
Two things for sure, they're timeless and relatable no matter what. And I always love that simple yet classy look and feel that Fred Perry gives.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I was fortunate to be one of the featured performers in the 2018 Asian Games. It was truly an honour to be involved in such a monumental and historic event in Indonesia.

If you could put any three bands in history on a lineup?
Radiohead, Bon Iver and Massive Attack.

Another you? Any other career that would have appealed?
Bartender or Barista. I love making coffee and cocktails.

One record you would keep forever?
My dad's records. He was the guitar player in a band called Kabama back in 1966. I was blown away when I heard their music for the first time. Whenever someone asks where I got my love and flair for music from, the credit mainly goes to him. He's the coolest.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Surabaya. Because nothing beats that hometown feel and vibe. On top of that, I could visit my family out there.

If you can make a record with anyone from history?
Beyoncé. She's a legend. She has been, without a doubt, a huge force in my musical career and one of my biggest inspirations. I love her.

A song you wished you had written?
'Find My Way To Love' by Jaspects and Chantae Cann. I think this particular track is quite unique with all the complex arrangements and compositions, yet somehow it is very comforting, beautiful, and still easy to listen to. It takes a lot of skills, bits of knowledge, and experience to be able to produce this type of song.

04Playlist Notes

'In Time' by FKA twigs.
This one is a gem. Storytelling meets electronic music, and it's not often you'll find this type of combination in this specific genre. So deep, it feels like you're in for one hell of an adventure.

'Mequetrefe' by Arca.
A wild, rebellious and extremely expressive electronic song ever produced, at least that's the vibe I got when hearing it for the first time. It's probably one of those tracks that best defines "You can be anything you want, there are no boundaries."

'Falaise' by Floating Points.
It is a track that made me fall deeply in love with this artist. For the first time in my life, I'm hearing a well-orchestrated blend of modular and strings sound mixed so perfectly together.

'Movement 6' by Floating Points.
Recorded and performed together with Pharoah Sanders and the London Symphony Orchestra, this wonderful piece made me cry. It felt like pain, but a beautiful pain.

'The Light' by Wizzy.
I decided to pursue my music career independently in 2020 after spending five years working for a major label. From a creative perspective, I was finally able to give 100% to what my music is all about without any limitation whatsoever. 'The Light' is my self relief.

'Shoreline Sus' by Flying Lotus.
We all have questions in life, and some of them may not be answered right away. All we need to do is move along, move on, and keep seeking those answers. That's what this track is all about from my perspective.

'Kurosaka Strikes' by Flying Lotus.
A deep dark soul who's abandoned, underestimated and humiliated in its entire life. But then grow to become a strong, powerful being filled with disappointment, anger, and resentment is how I described this particular track.

'Alright' by Kendrick Lamar.
My forever jam! A profound track with an awesome music video. It's the whole package!!!

'Almeda' by Solange.
This is one of my favourites from the album 'When I Get Home'. I really felt that in Solange's latest album, she undoubtedly explored so much, musically and visually speaking. And that resulted in the stood-out character she is now.

'Homage' by Vince Staples.
Staple's 'Big Fish Theory' album gives me a new music perspective on how blending different genres (rap, hip-hop, UK garage) can be super cool when it's done right and executed perfectly.

'FIND YOUR WAY BACK' by Beyoncé.
One of the most uplifting tracks I've heard recently. It just brightens my day, especially during this difficult time.

'Supernatural' by We Are KING.
I'm a big fan of this neo-soul group, they'll live forever in my heart. Just like one of the phrases in the lyrics, "There's magic in everything you do, supernatural", We Are KING is not just about music, their songs are like a constant reminder of wisdom and humility. Simply put, a life lesson.
