Name
Boy Azooga
Describe your style in three words?
Slacker glam toddler.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Brian Wilson performing Pet Sounds from start to finish at Primavera a couple years ago. The musicians were incredible and Brian seemed to be really enjoying himself. My girlfriend and I cried from start to finish.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Archie Bell & The Drells and Black Sabbath (circa 1970).
Which sub-cultures have influenced you?
I guess its hardly a sub-culture nowadays, but growing up I lived on my skateboard. I was obsessed with skate videos, clothes and that whole world. The people I skated with were much better than me though.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Jackie Chan was my hero growing up and seems like a lovely guy. His book 'My Life In Action' is amazing. I'd love to go for a couple of pints with him at The Claude in Cardiff.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
I love Club Ifor Bach in Cardiff. I played at The Brudenell Social Club this year for the first time, that was a dream come true too. Amazing venue.
Your greatest unsung hero in music?
Matthew Evans of The Keys.
Boy Azooga is the project of Cardiff Born Davey Newington. Davey has previously played drums in Charlotte Church’s Pop Dungeon under the pseudonym “Bongo Fury” and also with other Cardiff bands such as Keys and Monico Blonde.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Spread Your Wings' - Queen.
I remember fantasising about playing drums along to this at Wembley Stadium when I was about 7. I want those star sunglasses Freddie wears in the video.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Dumb' - Nirvana.
Self explanatory.
One record you would keep forever?
My Dad gave me a copy of 'Snowflakes Are Dancing' by Isao Tomita when I left home and I'll look after it forever.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Coolness is having courage, courage to do what’s right"
'Comfy In Nautica' - Panda Bear
A song you wished you had written?
'Chemistry' - The Keys.
Matthew Evans is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. 'Fwact!'
Best song to turn up loud?
'Girlfriend' - Ty Segall.
I had this on really loud when I first played it and when the end kicked in I lost my shit, so good.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Beryl' - Mark Knopfler.
I don't know why anyone wouldn't like this but its different to anything else I really listen to regularly.
New bands you are listening to now?
I'm pretty out of touch so none of these are really new but the 'newest' bands that I really like are Ultimate Painting, Buzzard, The Orielles and Younghusband.
