03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Katy J Pearson, I am from Bristol.

Describe your style in three words?
1970’s Texas Mom.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Kate Bush, she’s my idol and I literally died seeing her. She played a bunch of stuff I didn’t know and then 'Cloudbusting' at the end, a dream.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Fleetwood Mac since they’ve been one of my favourite bands since I was a little ween - I used to have a tape recorder that had 'Little Lies' on it - and Interpol - only got into them a few years ago but that first record is so raw it’s unreal.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
The 1970s folk scene and New Romantics; both such an interesting time for fashion and music.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
My fav venue is Thekla here in Bristol - it’s a boat that’s submerged so you’re basically playing underwater.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Judee Sill.

Katy J Pearson is signed to Heavenly Recordings. Her debut single 'Tonight' will be released 15th November. 'Tonight' is Katy's first outing as a solo artist, recorded with Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, M. Ward, Perfume Genius, Gruff Rhys) at his studio, Toy Box.

Watch the video directed by Conan Roberts and Jake McGowan (Unfolding Films) and shot on Dartmoor and the Devon coast, below.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Stuck' by Stacie Orrico.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Wild World' by Cat Stevens.

One record you would keep forever?
The White Album.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“The King of Marigold was in the kitchen,
cooking breakfast for the Queen.”

From 'Cry Baby Cry' by The Beatles.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Dirty Back Road' by B-52’s.

A song you wished you had written?
'Courtyard' by Bobbie Gentry.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Don’t Huzzle For Love' by The Apostles.

'Love Story' by Taylor Swift.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
