Name, where are you from?
I’m Lande and I’m from Exeter.
Describe your style in three words?
Queer, feminist punk.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Seeing Bikini Kill earlier this year was pretty up there. Child’s Pose and Big Joanie also played and they were both excellent.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
X-Ray Spex and mid-nineties Sleater-Kinney, two of the best bands in the world. I would love to meet Poly Styrene (RIP) and now especially since Janet Weiss has left S-K, I would so love to play with them as their original line-up.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I was massively influenced by riot grrrl when I was 18. Finding out about all those bands encouraged me to put feminism at the top of my priorities and at the front of my music.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
It would have to be Sylvia Plath. She’d obviously be great to talk to and it’d be so weird to talk to someone who’s been dead for nearly 60 years.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
Probably of all the venues I’ve been to, I still like The Cavern the best. I grew up playing shows there and it’s a hugely important space for Exeter.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
My best friend Iona, from Shit Present, is a total hero. She’s a constant musical inspiration for me. She tours with Muncie Girls playing bass and has recently learnt the drums to play in my solo project all the while writing new Shit Present songs and keeping up a really important full-time job.
Lande Hekt, of Exeter indie-punk trio Muncie Girls, has recorded a solo collection of seven songs which she’ll be releasing as an EP on 15 November. Titled ‘Gigantic Disappointment’, these songs were recorded with Ben David of The Hard Aches at his studio. The first single to be released from the record is ‘Carpet’.

The first track you played on repeat?
'Not For Anyone' by Hot Water Music was one of the many songs on a mix CD that I stole from my sister when I was about 9. I played the whole CD everyday.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'We Laugh at Danger (And Break All the Rules)' by Against Me! was my favourite off of Reinventing Axl Rose. When I listen to it now, it reminds me of how I felt at 16 when I first heard it.
One record you would keep forever?
'The Raincoats' by The Raincoats because I never get bored of that record. It’s so inspiring and I always turn to it when I’m feeling weird.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“You can be active with the activists or sleep in with the sleepers”
From 'Waiting For the Great Leap Forwards' by Billy Bragg.
A song you wished you had written?
I wish I’d written 'Can’t Hardly Wait' by The Replacements. All I can do is rip it off over and over again and hope no one notices.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Ask the Angels' by Patti Smith sounds so good loud.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Be Kind to Me' by Michael Hurley. I’m not sure anyone could be surprised that I like this song though because who wouldn’t like it? My favourite part is the mouth trumpet solo.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
I can’t hear 'Deceptacon' by Le Tigre without dancing.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Hounds of Love' by Kate Bush I think would be good at the end of an all-nighter. It’s a good song for when you’re feeling tired but happy.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Sacred Paws - 'Life’s Too Short'
From their album Run Around the Sun which came out earlier this year. This is my favourite song.
Cheerbleederz - 'Staying Up Late'
Cheerbleederz are a great new band ft members of Fresh and Happy Accidents.
Cultdreams - 'Not My Generation'
From their new record, things that hurt. This song is brilliant.
