Something I've been watching a lot lately is a jam session video featuring the keyboardist Brian Auger; he's a funk/jazz guy.
It's American culture rather than the UK, but I have surfed and skateboarded a lot and am really into BMX riding. When I was in the sixth form, I got an overseas sponsor and was determined to become a pro rider. The biggest thing this subculture taught me is that if you keep believing in yourself and work harder than others, you can make your dreams come true.
As a BMX rider, my venue is the street.
The American jazz musician Chet Baker. He would play something quiet while I paint a picture.
It's not a musician, but I would love to attend an art class taught by Hans Hoffmann, a German-born painter and teacher. I have not been able to get a copy of his art book yet, and I would love to find it.
It's a travel playlist for me; pure and simple UK sounds that I can enjoy on my journey.
I think it's probably 'Butterfly' by Jamiroquai. In secondary school, I bought the album 'A Funk Odyssey' and got to know the music well. I listened to this song the most.
I've been listening to Incognito ‘Above The Night’ since secondary school.
It’s a US artist, but the Bill Evans Trio album, ‘Moon Beams’. All the tracks are quiet and contemplative, but I really like them. I play this album on repeat while I’m painting.
It's a lyric from the Incognito track, 'Keep The Fires Burning.' The line, "Don't be afraid to step into the darkness," plays off the central theme and is really apt.
It's the Japanese collective, BEAT DOWN, made up of three MCs from the Buddha Brand group. I have been listening to Budda for a long time, but I put them on again recently and realized how great they are. The lyrics are just too good, and I hum the songs when I need a mood booster.
The track 'Estate', by Chet Baker, who I mentioned earlier. It's a live performance running over 10 minutes, but he doesn't sing the whole time. It's a quiet song with the trumpet taking center stage.
That would be Brian Auger.
