Musician — Brixton
A Aaron Taylor Photo
Name
Aaron Taylor
What do you do?
I'm a musician.
Where are you from?
I'm from Greenwich but living in Brixton now.
Describe your style in three words?
Simple. Relaxed. Classic.
Which British songwriter has influenced you the most?
Rod Temperton. He's not really a direct influence on my style as such but he wrote MJ's "Rock With You" so definitely a British writer worthy of mention.
Why do you think music is such a tuneful force for political change?
Music is the soundtrack to all of our lives. Despite our differences, our love of music remains something we all share so I reckon people are more likely to receive a message in song than explicit truths. Somehow I think music makes political empathy more possible.
Nina Simone - I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free
Aaron Taylor is a London-based singer, songwriter and producer. He has released two EP's, the latest of which titled 'Better Days' can be listened to below. After many years struggling to get his music heard - his song 'Lesson Learnt' was used to advertise the Apple Watch in 2016.
First track you played on repeat?
'Why We Sing' by Kirk Franklin.
Song that defines the teenage you?
'Yeah!' by Usher.
One record you would keep forever?
'Send It On' by D'Angelo.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Hang on to the world As it spins around,
Just don't let the spin Get you down."
'Someday We'll All Be Free' by Donny Hathaway
Best gig you have ever been to?
Most recently - Vulfpeck at The Brooklyn Bowl (London O2).
The energy was insane and people sang along to every single guitar and bass lick and riff.
A song you wished you had written?
'Knocks Me Off My Feet' by Stevie Wonder.
Four new songs you can’t stop playing now?
'Nobody Other' by Kadhja Bonet
Kadhja's nostalgic vibes remind me of a previous life I've obviously forgotten about.
'Japanese Denim' by Daniel Caesar
Simply a great record and I keep singing the chorus to myself.
'Jusfayu (feat. No Wyld)' by KAMAU
The bounce always makes me want to dance and I can relate to the sentiments conveyed.
'Talk To Me' by Reginald Omas Mamode IV
Makes me do my bass face.
