A Andy Gill Photo
Name, where are you from?
Andy Gill, Gang of Four, Leeds, Manchester and London.
Describe your style in three words?
Ultra New Funk.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Bob Marley at the Lyceum. At his absolute best.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
James Brown and Band of Gypsys, because they’re very good.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Beatniks. Thoughtful approach to life, not like hipsters.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Erik Satie. Buy him an absinthe.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
I’m fond of the Lyceum. An early favourite gig of Gang of Four (and also the above-mentioned Marley gig).
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Mark or Doris from The Flatliners – a really great unknown US band who deserve your attention.
Gang of Four were formed by guitarist Andy Gill in late seventies in Leeds. A pioneering post-punk band of the period, today Gang Of Four are cited as influences by the like of Franz Ferdinand to St Vincent, from Sleater-Kinney and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem to Nine Inch Nails and IDLES.
Gang Of Four's latest album 'Happy Now' is out on 19th April. The band also play a headline gig on 12th April at London's Borderline.

The first track you played on repeat?
'(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction', The Rolling Stones.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Crosstown Traffic', Jimi Hendrix.
One record you would keep forever?
The Band, by The Band.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"We’ve all got opinions, where do they come from?"
('Why Theory' – Gang of Four, Andy Gill)
A song you wished you had written?
'I Say A Little Prayer', Aretha Franklin.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Hold My Liquor', Kanye West.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Roadrunner', Modern Lovers.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Good Times', Chic.
I was much reviled for loving Chic in the late '70s because 'disco' was considered crap!
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'The First Cut Is The Deepest', I Roy.
The greatest version of this much-covered song!
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
'Run The Jewels' (ok not new but whatever!).
