Name, where are you from?
Artist name, BrokenPen. Originally from Angola but currently living in Lewisham.
Describe your style in three words?
My style is a fusion of hip-hop and poetry, like a UK J. Cole fused with Joyner Lucas.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Best gig I've ever been to would have to be Ghetts 'Ghetto Gospel 2' album tour because I don't think I've learned more from anyone by just watching them than Ghetts.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
I don't really mess with bands but if I did then in no order B2K, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and N-Dubz.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I would say neo soul because it's like soul with its own little twist and grime because that's what we grew up on, it's our movement and a depiction of how we felt growing up.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Nikola Tesla because I just wanna know how he figured out some of the stuff he figured out, like who comes across wireless energy transference what a sick man.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
The O2 stadium because it's just an iconic stadium and the capacity is huge.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Ghetts he just deserves more recognition and praise but he's so ahead of us all it's like when you've caught up it's too late.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Smooth Criminal' by Michael Jackson. When I was young there was no one greater than Michael Jackson, the arrangement of the song, the tones, the overall vibe is just unmatched.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley. Everything that seemed to be like it was the end of the world always managed to get fixed and I always stayed patient throughout most of my trials and tribulations with the help of God.
One record you would keep forever?
'Everything I Do' by Bryan Adams. I remember my uncle being some big bodybuilder with tattoos and a gold tooth but every time he listened to this song it would just look so strange watching him enjoy it, one of the reasons I actually started paying attention to music and how it makes people feel - including myself.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I woke up with a point to prove"
From 'Daily Duppy Freestyle' by Ghetts. It's really hard to just think of one song lyric there are so many, but one that comes to mind is "I woke up with a point to prove" pretty self-explanatory it's how I feel every time I get on stage.
A song you wished you had written?
'What's Poppin' by Jack Harlow. I'm not from America so it's impossible for me to have ever written it but the song is just to vibey.
Best song to turn up loud?
'I Feel Amazing' by Richie Campbell. It's just feel-good vibes. Do it and tell me I'm wrong.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Give It Away' by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I guess cos I'm so hip hop people wouldn't expect me to like such a rock type song.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Candy' by Cameo. I keep the electric slide locked and loaded for any party I've even enhanced the moves so I give it my own flavour, I don't play when it comes to candy.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Ben' by Micheal Jackson. It's a calm and mellow vibe it's that kind of get ready to go sleep type of song.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Not really into bands. Maybe if NSYNC come back then I'm involved.
