A CREAM with a K Photo
Name, where are you from?
Lee Tatlock, Tokyo Japan.
Describe your style in three words?
Matrix-Slob-Chic.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I saw Beck play at Fuji Rock which was awesome enough but then I got to meet him after. It's a hard one to top.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Pixies and Sonic Youth.
If I had never heard these two bands my music wouldn’t be what it is now.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Through my teen years - I was surrounded in Tokyo pop culture.
The Y2K J-POP / J-ROCK music scene was cool and very influential for me. It was a melting pot. Gal fashion, Visual Kei, Harajuku was going strongest then. That kind of subculture is not around anymore, in a real sense, so I’m very grateful I was there to experience it. I think it’s integrated into my style and individuality.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Bruce Lee popped into my mind just now. I’m doing Wing Chun so I started watching his old movies and reading his books. I feel like we could be friends for sure.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
Budokan in Japan. I haven’t played there yet, but it’s top on my future goals.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Shivaree. Why does nobody know her?!
A musician, visual artist and former model, Cream with a K (Lee Tatlock) is best known for her former involvement as the singer in the Japanese Pop band Neko Punch. Her first fully English project, Cream with a K combines influences from Lee's hometown of London and her adopted hometown of Tokyo.
Catch Cream with a K live in the UK on 4th February in London at The Social.
The first track you played on repeat?
Sugababes - 'Overload'.
In the olden days there was no internet to look up lyrics - so I had to transcribe it myself.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Tsumi to Batsu' - Shena Ringo.
I was into anything Angsty, Gothic and Japanese
One you would keep forever?
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - By the Way album (First CD I bought with my own pocket money).
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“People are tricky, you can't afford to show
Anything risky, anything they don't know
The moment you try, well, kiss it goodbye”
'It’s Not' - Aimee Mann.
A song you wished you had written?
'Devils Haircut' - Beck.
It’s like 3 notes the whole way through the song. It’s perfect.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Stupid Girl' - Garbage.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Flower of Carnage' - Meiko Kaji.
When I sing it at Karaoke everyone’s like wtf?!
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Invaders Must Die' - Prodigy.
(Wear PVC and dance like you’re at a rave in a Y2K film)
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'I Smoke A Lot' - K’s Choice.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
I recently played with a new girl band called Hypsoline in Brighton. I thought they were awesome - I think they are where it’s at right now.
