A DJ Rogue Photo
Name, where are you from?
DJ Rogue - Bristol, UK.
Describe your style in three words?
Hip Hop, designer, casual.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
When I DJ’d for Dead Prez in 1999 at The Fleece in Bristol, when they first dropped 'Hip Hop' I was doing the sound check scratching to the instrumental of the biggest tune of the time with Dead Prez dancing around and bigging up my scratches - surreal.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Jimi Hendrix and Ol' Dirty Bastard on stage at the same time, just because it would be insane and the after party would be one to tell the grandkids LOL.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Hip hop, Ragga, Dubstep / Grime - I don’t think 'Mr Mention' by Buju Banton left my Walkman the whole time I was 12 haha.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Kanye West, so he can drop them jewels on me.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Bournemouth Opera House - a crazy huge building.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Stepchild - MC, singer, DJ, breaker, producer.
Relly and Rogue are names that have been synonymous with the Bristol UK landscape now for over a decade. Relly has featured on most of the biggest projects to emerge out of the city while Rogue has production credits on tens of scores of Bristol heavyweight's albums, the two collaborated and released the highly anticipated Bris-hop album ‘Let Them Know’ in September 2018.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Pop That Pussy' by 2 Live Crew.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Fuck Tha Police' by N.W.A.
One record you would keep forever?
'Back To Wreck Shop' by Tuff Crew, I used to try and copy all the scratches, and it’s got the famous sample “so damn tough” on it.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“I’d rather be happy being myself than sad trying to please everyone else” J. Cole
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
As much as I love my classic era hip hop, I’m not one to really go on a dance floor, but if I’d drank enough it’d be pretty much any trap beat! I’m a sucker for 808s. 'KOD' by J. Cole
A song you wished you had written?
'School Spirit' by Kanye West. I wish I produced that beat.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Down Out' by Kid Cudi.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Down in the Valley' by Burl Ives.
17.Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Archangel' by Burial.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Elevators' EP by Springa, just listen to the whole EP it’s amazing, hard to choose a track to pick, but I will say 'Never Been Proud' and also Wish Master, he has an EP dropping in March called 'Boombap To The Future' which I have a scratch feature on, check them both out.
