03Interview

Name, where are you from?
I am Chris Bailey, the singer in Do Nothing, from Nottingham.

Describe your style in three words?
Divorced supply teacher.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I’ll say Caribou at Glastonbury a few years ago. We had just played that day (as part of an old project) so we were relaxed, it was during a very pretty sunset and they killed it. Dan Snaith was very smiley and the whole thing felt very wholesome.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Tom Waits and The Pop Group. Waits because he’s the ultimate super genius, and The Pop Group because I just think it would be interesting. I’ve been told that Mark Stewart asks for two whole rotisserie chickens on his rider and eats them both all by himself.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I spend a large portion of my time ingesting completely useless information from the internet. There are a few particularly odd Tumblr subcultures that I’ve used as inspiration for various bits of writing - there are folks who consider themselves to be in a romantic relationship with a God, people who undergo a whole bunch of surgery to make themselves look like a Ken doll etc. All very interesting stuff.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Ric Flair because I need a good slap.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
The Brudenell in Leeds. It just has the perfect atmosphere. Always hosting great bands, selling reasonably priced pints and there are snooker tables.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Brian Protheroe has an absolute banger called 'Pinball', which as far as I can tell is about sinking pints.

Do Nothing will release their debut EP 'Zero Dollar Bill' on 10th April 2020. Listen, purchase or stream it via orcd.co/donothing.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
I dunno if it’s the first, but I got obsessed with 'Rocky Raccoon' by the Beatles when I was younger and kept playing my dad’s record of that. It’s actually in my record player right now because I listened to it like three times in a row the other day.

A song that defines the teenage you?
There’s plenty of terrible stuff I could put for this but I’ll say 'The End has No End' by The Strokes.

One record you would keep forever?
'In Rainbows' by Radiohead.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Hello hello hello hello,
Goodbye goodbye goodbye goodbye,
That’s all there is.”

From 'Leaves That Are Green' by Simon and Garfunkel. I like simple stuff!

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Funkytown' by Lipps Inc. Me and Kasper (our guitarist) refer to that song as a 'hook compilation'. Also, The Glimmers do a version of 'Physical' by Olivia Newton-John which I really like. That actually happened at a night that I was at recently and I was in love with the DJ who played it for at least a few hours.

A song you wished you had written?
'I Never Wanted You' by Headphones.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Keep The Customer Satisfied' by Simon and Garfunkel. I know that might sound like a weird choice but it makes me lose my tiny mind - the horns at the end are outrageous.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Teenage Dream' by Katy Perry. Love it loads.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
Something like 'Open Eye Signal' by Jon Hopkins maybe. Very repetitive and rhythmic and beautiful, doesn’t distract people from spouting dribbly wide-eyed nonsense.

Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Antimatter Animals' by Tropical Fuck Storm.
'Concept' by Treeboy & Arc.
'Years Ago' by Black Midi.
'Diana' by Megatrain.
And not exactly a new artist, but Girl Band from Dublin have just returned from what could have been a permanent hiatus. 'Shoulderblades'.
