The first track you played on repeat?

The Stone Roses - Made of Stone - Remastered

My first introduction to alternative music came from an older boy at school who made me a compilation tape of indie bands. Side 2 started with 'Made of Stone' and I absolutely wore it out. Growing up in the north west it felt like the music was part of the scenery.

A song from your favorite album?

Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)

I got into Motown quite early through my dad's compilation albums, so when I later discovered 'What's Going On' it felt like something familiar being honed to perfection.

A song from your most memorable gig?

Steam Down - Free My Skin - II

The weekly Steamdown nights have everything you could want from a gig... amazing music, no barrier between performer and audience, inclusive, political, packed to the rafters, dancing, improvisation, poetry... feel like an evangelist every time I go.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back

This is just absolutely timeless songwriting, groove and playing. As a musician, it reminds me how every part contributes to the groove... the verses don't really have any drums in but you don't notice because everything else is carrying it.

A new song you're listening to?

Kadhja Bonet - For You

I love Kadhja Bonet her voice, production, string arrangements are really unique. I listened to her album 'Childqueen' a lot and she's just brought out this new single.

Best song to turn up loud?

The Gladiators - Soul Rebel - 2000 Digital Remaster

I first heard this through a big sound system waiting for a Marcia Griffiths gig and the DJ did about 3 rewinds. It sounds amazing on headphones but a big sound system takes it to another level.

A song that defines the teenage you?

The Jetset - Wednesday Girl

It changed every year but from 16-19, my first band used to do a cover of this song even though/because it's pretty obscure. We thought we were mods and it talks about the weekend, being obsessed with a girl, is very upbeat with a cheesy organ so lots of things I believed in!

An anthemic song?

Lamont Dozier - Going Back to My Roots

I think this is the best 12" record ever made. Spotify only has half of it but it's still worth it and the piano intro has inspired so many dance tracks. Another one from the Motown stable.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

Bobby Womack - Daylight

Another one I've covered and one of my all-time favourites. Literally talks about that 5am party feeling.
