A Huang Hsuan Photo
Name, where are you from?
Huang Hsuan / Yellow, Taipei, Taiwan.
What do you do?
Chief of WRONGTYPE, music producer, singer and artist.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
The best Gig I ever went to was Summer Sonic 2018 at Makuhari Beach in Japan. The stage was located on the beach. The most memorable moment for me was towards the evening, standing in the crowd with everyone, listening to Tom Misch sing his song 'Movie' as the sunset, you could feel the sea breeze. It was a very special atmosphere. I also feel very lucky to have been at the live performance of George Clinton of which I was very impressed.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
“Choose life, choose a job, choose a career, choose a family..."
During High School, I watched the movie Trainspotting with my classmates and immediately fell in love with the young characters on the screen. After the movie, I ran out to buy tight-fitting pants and short shirts to dress like Ewan McGregor. Every time I think about that movie, the song 'Perfect Day' continues to play over and over in my head.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
This question is very hard to answer. I’d probably say that The 2019 Wake Up Festival in Chiayi left the deepest impression on me. Although it was a rainy night, more fans showed up than was anticipated and the venue was overflowing with people. It was the first performance after I won the Golden Melody Award and everyone sang my songs with me from the beginning to the end. It was very exciting because it was the first-time hearing so many people singing my song.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
Jamiroquai. I love his music just as much as I love his MVs and live clips. I think my style of performing is very similar to his and it would be very interesting to be on the same line up as him.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Lemmy, the lead singer of Motorhead. I’ve seen a documentary about Lemmy and I was as much surprised as I was curious about his interests and his collections. If possible, I would love to have a beer and talk with him.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
My Mom!!! My mother is a gospel singer, a guitarist, and a piano player. The main reason why I’m following music as a passion and a profession is because of her and her edification. She has inspired me a lot.
How did you select the tracks for this playlist?
"You Are What You Eat". For me, music is like food. The music I listen to will affect and influence me as a person. Also, it is important to balance the nutrition I receive through music. But I also try to not force myself too much, try to keep it natural to maintain my musical creativity.
The first track you played on repeat?
Recently it has been 'On My Mind' by Jorja Smith'.
She is a creative singer whom I admire in the new generation. Her voice reminds me of another female singer, Amy Winehouse.
While in Japan during 2018, I saw her performance at Summer Sonic and she’s both charming and very talented.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Yellow' by Coldplay. Obviously, there’s no need for further explanation. Every time we went to KTV (Karaoke), I had to order and sing this song. It became my theme song. Because my last name is Huang=Yellow, and the song is called yellow, everyone has called me Yellow since high school.
One record you would keep forever?
'Mirrorwriting' by Jamie Woon. Jamie Woon has always been one of the most important musical nutrients in my life. In addition to his soft and charming voice, his arrangements are also very detailed, stylish and groovy. I especially like the song 'Waterfront' from this album. This song makes me feel peaceful and relaxed.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"ROCK IS MY LIFE, PUNK IS MY ATTITUDE, FUNKNESS IS MY SOLUTION,
OH PSYCHEDELIC REVOLUTION, SOUL IS MY SISTER,
BLUES IS MY BROTHER AND ROCK IS MY LIFE!”
This lyric comes from a song by Cro-Magnon and Yohei Miyake called ‘Tokyo Times’.
The lyric expresses exactly my values and attitude towards music. Music is also like languages we speak such that different styles have different grammars. You can get a lot of inspiration through different music styles. The first time I heard the song, it felt like it’s telling me to live my own life with my own spirit. It has a very powerful message.
Best song to turn up loud?
La La La Song, from Kubota Tosinobu. My mom is a huge fan of Kimura Takuya, so I used to watch a Japanese TV show he starred in with my mother when I was young. In this show the song would play and it’s really a classic! The moment the refrain plays it’s like happiness will come to life.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'The Hammer' by Motorhead. Everyone may know my music style -- more soul, jazz, funk -- but in fact, for a while, I loved listening to heavy metal, like music from Lemmy whom I mentioned before. Maybe no one knows, but I have secretly paid tribute to this song in my works.
Any new bands you are listening to now?
