A Matilda Mann Photo
Name, where are you from?
Matilda Mann from Shepherds Bush.
Describe your style in three words?
Cottage-core, oversized, colour-coordinated.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Ahh might have to be The Staves. They’re just immaculate. I don’t think they’re capable of singing a song wrong. It was Christmas time, and the venue was so pretty and the whole time I just feel transported to somewhere magical.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands or artists in history?
Laura Marling and Big Thief. They’re two of my biggest idols in music and I feel like we attract a similar type of crowd. Mainly just an excuse to sit and watch their sets in trance.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Maybe Alan Rickman, a bit random I know, but he just seemed like a really lovely guy who had so much wisdom to share! I’d love to be able to just have a coffee with him and talk about life. I feel like it would be so soothing.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
Hackney Arts Centre! I've never played there, but I’ve seen some of my favourite artists perform on its stage. I love how there isn’t really any seats, it’s just big steps slanted downwards towards the stage. I think it used to be a theatre and it has this old-fashioned feel to it and everyone that plays there just gives such an intimate performance, even though it’s quite a big venue.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I adore Tim Minchin. He does a lot of comedy songs and wrote the music and lyrics for the musical “Matilda”. But he also has a lot of really personal songs (that sometimes have a sad feel to them, but all they do is relax me and kind of make me feel settled).
The first track you played on repeat?
'Lovestained' by Hope Tala. I played this for an entire summer when it first came out. Still always go back to it and have to repeat it at least five times.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Complicated' by Avril Lavigne. All I listened to was Avril Lavigne for the whole of 2012. I thought she was so cool.
One record you would keep forever?
'If I Was' by The Staves (Or the Shrek soundtracks). The Staves are such a huge part of how I found my sound. They have such effortless harmonies, that just instantly give you goosebumps. They’ve also made so many different kinds of songs, while still very much sounding like The Staves.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"And I wrote an epic letter to you
And it's 22 pages front and back but it's too good to be used
And I tried to be a girl who likes to be used
I'm too good for that, there's a mind under this hat"
From 'Goodbye England' by Laura Marling. Laura Marling is the reason I got in to songwriting. She was pretty much all I listened to when I was 18. I felt like she wrote all her songs just for me, and I’ve always tried to make my songs have that effect on people.
A song you wished you had written?
'Suddenly I See' by KT Tunstall. You can’t get any better than this. OR, 'The King' by Sarah Kingsley. The amount of serotonin that song gives me is insane.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Ultraviolet' by Stiff Dylans. Just iconic really.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'The Lark Ascending' by Vaughan Williams. I listen to this most mornings. I find it so relaxing to start the day with classical music. It always calms me down and lets me distance myself from the world for a little while.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Juice' by Lizzo. I don’t need to explain how fire this song is. You can’t dislike it.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'The Sweet Escape' by Gwen Stefani. Everyone of all ages will forever have a place in their heart for this song. It’s feel good and just takes any stress you have away.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
I adore Big Thief and their song - 'Shark Smile'. That whole album is just incredible.
