Name, where are you from?
Jacob Shepansky, I live in Montreal, Canada, but I grew up in Vancouver, Canada.
Describe your style in three words?
Comfortable, Utilitarian, Tourist.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds in 2014 with my mum in Vancouver... It was the first time I'd seen a band like them, so intense, yet beautiful? I was floored the whole show, it was like nothing I'd ever seen before.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Beck ('Mellow Gold' era) and Tom Waits. Both were influential to me when I was growing up, there was a sense of playfulness and dedication to both of 'em, they were weird as hell. That would be a great gig, Beck coming out with his acoustic guitar and probably a leaf blower or something, and then Tom Waits solo making jokes 'n sh*t between songs... if only...
Which subcultures have influenced you?
We like to do thing's very DIY, so that would be a big one. We do as much as we can in-house. Paul our drummer did all of the art for our new record, a few animated videos, and designed a bunch of merch for us. We like to have control of our projects and it also gives us the challenge to make something out of nothing.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I'd love to hang with David Bowie. Just to chat about whatever comes to mind, nothing music-related, just get to know him ya know? Maybe give his records a little more context.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
The Rickshaw! It was the prominent venue to go to when I was living in Vancouver, a lot of great memories and a lot of money spent there... it also used to be a Kung-Fu theatre so it's got the perfect slanted floors for a venue, everyone gets to see what's going on! We haven't played there yet... one day... it's a great sounding room.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Oh boy, David Berman, RIP. He had a really special way of explaining day-to-day monotony that I've always been attached to. His records with Silver Jews and Purple Mountains have been on repeat for quite some time now and have been very inspiring. Though I feel like people either absolutely love him, or don't care for it. I love him.
Pottery will release their debut album, 'Welcome To Bobby's Motel', on 26th June 2020. Find out more and pre-order it at partisanrecords.com/artists/pottery.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Welcome Back' by Mase. This track just has the best vibe... everything about it is just so positive, I used to listen all day.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Sweet Jane' by Velvet Underground. I used to be big into Velvet Underground and '60s bands when I was a teenager and loved all that psychedelic stuff. I would just nerd out in my room for days haha.
One record you would keep forever?
I have a lot of my Grandpa's old records from when he used to work at a radio station in Edmonton, Alberta. He would be given records all the time, and then eventually passed many of them down to me. One of my favourites is a warped, beat-up copy of Devo's 'Are We Not Men? We Are Devo!'. It's a special one.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I'm an art deco gecko all I drink is prosecco!"
From 'Detonation Level Raw' by Fountain. It's just a funny tongue in cheek line and hits at the perfect time in the song. It was also my go-to mic-check song for a while, I think the rest of the band got sick of it haha.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Heybb!' by Binki is a pure slapper with a super fun beat. Just rips. I'll be ripping some dirty dancing moves on the floor if this track comes on... you can count on it...
A song you wished you had written?
'Range Life' by Pavement. It's so simple but so perfect and full. It feels like you're on the beach with all of your friends on the first day of summer, but you're the ghost of yourself looking down at the group of homies going "yup, you earned this".
Best song to turn up loud?
'Down In The Basement' by Viagra Boys, pretty self-explanatory.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Bad Feeling' by Cobra Man. It's actually pretty on par with the other sh*t we listen to haha.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'No Other' by Gene Clark, just zone out and listen, then strut home...
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Just For Loving You I Pay The Price' by Cindy Lee. Cindy Lee has been on rotation at home for a while now, their new record 'Whats Tonight To Eternity' is where it's at.
'Top Ticket' by P.E. Our new record was produced by Jonathan Schenke who plays in a band called P.E. and they put out a sweet slippery ass record a few months ago.
'The Band' by Paul Jacobs. Paul, the drummer of Pottery, just put out a great solo EP called 'Portraits Of George'. He's a songwriting machine.
