Name, where are you from?
Surya Sen, North London.

Describe your style in three words?
I’ll come later.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I saw Disclosure in O2 Brixton Academy in 2013. Disclosure’s 'Settle' changed how I viewed electronic music. There was a distinct difference in how they mixed their records and got those crispy drums and unquantized Dilla-like swing - Something I had never heard before so to hear them do it live and to hear the extent of those crispy drums was life-altering!

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Gorillaz and Fela Kuti. The sheer amount of hits these two acts have and how interactive their live shows are is epic. Goosebumps.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
The acid rave scene, the West Coast techno scene of the '80s, Chicago deep scene of the '90s, the '00s Japanese fashion scene. Miami booty house!

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Madlib - I’d love to learn the science of how he hears and breaks down a record. He reportedly did the beats for 'Madvilliany' all on his BOSS 303. I’d love to learn about his workflow.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Alexandra Palace. Great sound system and a great space not to mention the views of the city!

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Rico Wade!

North London’s rising talent Surya Sen returns with his first single of the year, 'Earn It', and the announcement of his debut mixtape 'At What Cost?' released 15th April on Skint Records.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Mambo No. 5' by Lou Bega.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Late' by Kanye West.

One record you would keep forever?
'Gentleman' by Fela Kuti.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"You can let these dream killers kill your self esteem or use your arrogance as a the steam to power your dream"

From 'Last Call' by Kanye West.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Flap Your Wings' by Nelly.

A song you wished you had written?
'N.Y. State Of Mind' by Nas.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Thief's Theme' by Nas.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Five to One' by The Doors.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Kalifornia' by Mos Def.

Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Honey' by Nikhil Beats.
'Mornings' by Safiyyah (ft. Finn Foxell).
'Gently' by KeepVibesNear, Evie Golding.
