Heavy, garage, psych.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Big choice, that!! I think I’d have to go with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at Manchester Apollo though – it was on Halloween and the first time I had seen them at their own headline show. It was a few months after I saw them absolutely wipe out the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury (with the killer footage of 'Stagger Lee' with the girl in the crowd he sings/shouts it at).
It never ceases to amaze me how godlike he is on stage, him and Warren Ellis are beyond words.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
I think it’d have to be Satanic Majesties-era Rolling Stones and The Small Faces for me - purely just to thank them for writing such incredible music. The Small Faces especially - Steve Marriott is one of my absolute all-time heroes.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I think it all started with The Brian Jonestown Massacre, without Anton Newcombe and his sheer talent of being ridiculously prolific with quality songs I don’t think we’d have lot of the garage/psych bands we have today.

This then leads me to BRMC and their whole scene, when you go to one of their shows it feels like a real event – everyone is dressed up in their leather and you feel like a real part of something. The band really look after their crowd and I admire them so much for that.
Then that leads me to The Black Angels – they’re fucking brilliant in general but then they went a step further and actually organised their own festival. It’s unbelievable what communities these bands have created and it’s all so inclusive. They’re the personification of what music should be about.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Paul Weller. He’s essentially soundtracked my entire life and I’d love to meet him and just talk about music. I’d also drop the tone and tell him that I want Broken Stones playing at my funeral.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
The New Adelphi Club in Hull is home to us. Paul Jackson is one of the most truly wonderful and supportive people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I played my first ever proper gig there when I was about 13 or something and he’s supported me ever since. How many 200 capacity venues can say they’ve had Oasis, Radiohead, The Stone Roses, PJ Harvey, Franz Ferdinand, Thee Hypnotics, Green Day, My Bloody Valentine, Pulp AND MORE play there?! It’s insane. Long live the Adelphi.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees. He inspired me to start my own record label (Clubbed Thumb Records) after I read an article about what he’s done with Castle Face. He’s prolific as hell and works with his friends on an honest handshake.
The music he writes is consistently ace and his label is cool as f*ck – not to mention being one of the best live bands in the world right now.
