03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

Sugar, spice, detriment.

The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?

The Beatles - Michelle - Remastered 2009

I was 11 or 12. Either played it on a loop on YouTube or my Zune. Loved a lot of Beatles songs but this one is so catchy.

A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?

Alice Coltrane - Turiya & Ramakrishna

Alice Coltrane is a multi-talented jazz alien. I would get high & listen to this album on repeat in the dark instead of doing homework. It’s the first instrumental album that really spoke to me.

A song from your most memorable gig?

Alabama Shakes - Gemini

This song rapid fires all my synapses. Alabama Shakes sounds like the music I grew up listening to, but with a front woman that looks like me. Real inspiring stuff. This album is really thematic, like The Odyssey. Brittany Howard shreds.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

Marcos Valle - Estrelar

Everything. Colorful array of juice flashing through my mind as the bassline beats my chest like a defibrillator. It feels like what I assume Miami felt like in the '80s.

A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?

Odetta - Sakura - Live

It’s short, it’s pretty, steel guitar always gets me, it’s about trees but makes me feel like I’m walking into battle.

Best song to turn up loud? And why?

Rick James - Fire And Desire

In the car. In the shower. In my head. Best karaoke duet song. There’s almost too much power.

A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?

Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused

Skipping school to binge Doctor Who, trying to get the weed smell out of my mom’s cherry red Chrysler Sebring with bath n body works cherry blossom perfume, not shutting up about the dad rock I listened to, depression, my German teacher winning Jeopardy then quitting.

An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?

Stevie Wonder - Another Star

It’s a song about heartbreak, but it kind of makes you feel like you have superpowers. A powerful farewell song I’m sure everyone can relate to.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

Ween - Your Party

After you leave the party, it makes you go home and dream about maybe throwing your own party and how great that would be. The dream is soundtracked by a saxophone.
