Yuto Yoshida, Tachiaigawa (Central Tokyo).
What do you do?
Model / Student.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
It has to be a scene from 'Babylon', a film made in England by an Italian director. One of Aswad was in it and the soundtrack is great. It’s such a visually cool film. I used to go by a shop all the time when I was in secondary school and it was a guy from there who told me about it.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’ve got a shaved head, so sometimes people assume I must be into skinhead culture. That’s not really true. I have seen a lot of movies and stuff, though.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
I hadn’t been to a live concert in ages, but I went to see OLAibi and Kuniyuki at VENT—a club in Omotesando. It was so damn cool. The show happened really recently, so it’s all still fresh in my mind.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
It’s not something I’ve thought of before, but I guess I’d have to say The Beatles. When I was in primary school I had this Ringo Starr sticker, I’ve no idea where I got it from. It makes me think of that, so I reckon I’d want to be behind the kit (lol).
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I’d sit down with David Bowie to play shogi (Japanese chess). I’ve been really into shogi recently.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I'd have to say Yves Tumor, who releases on Warp Records. I guess they are in the limelight right now. Not exactly a hero/ine, but I just like them.

The first track you played on repeat?
'Yellow Submarine' by The Beatles. If we’re talking about the first of the first. I don’t really know why, but in primary school, me and my close friends loved that track.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Purging The Demons' by Shintaro Sakamoto. Well, that’s pretty recent. It’s not as if I’ve had loads of ups and downs in my life. It’s not from the UK, but for the feeling, I have to say Shintaro Sakamoto’s 'Purging The Demons'. It’s kind of creepy but kind of sweet. It’s relaxed but sort of nuts at the same time. I went to see him live recently.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
I’ll say Shintaro Sakamoto for this one, too. 'Like an Obligation'. I don’t know, it’s kind of a contradiction, but kind of not...
Best song to turn up loud?
'Help!' by The Beatles. I wonder...the only song coming to me is 'Help!' by The Beatles. I’m not singing to it exactly, but it goes around my head when I’m taking exams. “Someone help me out here!” It’s that kind of thing I think.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
I don’t know if people would be surprised by this or not, but I’d say Sade. I like that band.
New bands you are listening to now?
I heard Squarepusher for the first time in a long time yesterday. They’re not exactly new, though.
